Biofuels

The United States of America imports two thirds of its petroleum; 60% of which is used for producing transportation fuels. Under the Clean Air Act , as amended by the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the Environmental Protection Agency is required to set the annual standards for the Renewable Fuel Standard program for each year to reach the goal of blending 36 billion gallons of renewable fuel by 2022. This regulatory action proposes to establish the annual percentage standards for cellulosic, biomass-based diesel, advanced biofuel, and total renewable fuels that apply to gasoline and diesel produced or imported.

The PFTL conducts both laboratory and computational experiments to facilitate in the advancement of the biofuel industry through tribology and fluid dynamics.
