Additive Manufacturing

Additive manufacturing has been inundated with support since the advent of printing with more robust materials such as metals and ceramics. However, difficulties inherent in the use of powder particulates as raw material has led to concerns over the uniformity and strength of printed parts. This is considered to be one of the main obstacles preventing additive manufacturing from revolutionizing modern industry. Therefore it is crucial to understand the behaviors of the poweder particulate feedstock during each stage of the manufacturing process.

The PFTL currently performs experiments and modeling with the aim of elucidating powder flow phenomena such as cohesion, adhesion, resistance to shear and particle packing present in additive manufacturing.
