Richard Moore Education Award

Approved by College Council 1 May 2001.
Amended 2013.

Purpose

The purpose of the Richard Moore Education Award is to recognize faculty members in the Mellon College of Science who have made substantial and sustained contributions to the educational mission of the college, particularly faculty members whose educational contributions to the college have extended over a substantial portion of their academic careers.

Eligibility

All tenure track, teaching track, and special faculty in the Mellon College of Science are eligible. Past winners of the Richard Moore Award are not eligible.

Administration

The Dean of MCS will designate an Associate Dean of MCS to be responsible for the administration of the nomination and selection process, including calling for nominations and convening the selection committee.

Nominations

Nominations for the Richard Moore Education Award are to be made by the department heads in the Mellon College of Science. Each nomination should be made in the form of a letter not to exceed two single spaced pages in length, addressed to the Richard Moore Education Award Selection Committee. All nominations are due on or before the first Monday in February and should be delivered electronically to the MCS Associate Dean's office in Doherty Hall.

Selection Committee

The Selection Committee for the Richard Moore Award has the same membership as the Julius Ashkin Award Committee. This committee consists of the three most recent among the available recipients of the Ashkin Award, three regular or special faculty members appointed by the MCS College Council for that academic year and one or two undergraduate students, also selected by the MCS College Council. The chairperson, ex-officio member of the Committee, is the MCS Associate Dean responsible for the administration of the award.

The Selection Committee adopts its own rules of procedure.

Selection

The Selection Committee chooses, from all the nominations submitted to it, one person to recommend to the Dean of MCS to be the recipient of the Richard Moore Award. The Selection Committee’s recommendation to the Dean and the Dean’s approval of the award are made in time for the Richard Moore Award to be presented to the recipient at the annual meeting of the college at the end of the spring semester.

Presentation of the Richard Moore Award

The award, consisting of a certificate and a check, is presented to the recipient at the annual meeting of the college at the end of the spring semester. The Moore Award should also be cited in the University-wide public ceremony at which time the Robert Doherty Prize and the William S. Ryan Award for the recognition of Meritorious Teaching will be awarded. At the discretion of the Dean of MCS, this award may not be presented every year.
