Po-Shen Loh, associate professor of mathematical sciences and coach of the U.S. International Mathematical Olympiad Team, authored a new Ted-Ed video. The lesson, Coin Flip Conundrum, takes viewers on a journey of probability and algebra to understand the math behind flipping coins. While flipping one coin gives an equal chance of getting heads or tails, how do the odds match up when flipping coins repeatedly? Loh’s lesson looks at the probability between flipping two heads in a row versus flipping heads then tails. Do the odds remain equal? It’s not as intuitive as you might first think!
