Photography & Video
The Photography & Video team tells the unique story of the university by capturing and showcasing CMU’s groundbreaking research, world-changing students and faculty, and beautiful campus with high quality photography and video compositions.
The team works with partners across the university on projects ranging from quick turnaround photos and videos for press releases and social media to highly produced pieces in support of major university initiatives, and provides artistic and technical consultation.
Senior Associate Director, Photo & Video
Carrie has worked in Web & Creative at CMU for more than 10 years. She serves as the first point of contact for all video and photo projects. Her primary role is to strategically plan and execute video and photo coverage for major university initiatives and events. Carrie has a bachelor’s degree in professional writing from Wheeling Jesuit University in her home state of West Virginia, and a master’s degree from the University of Exeter in South West England. When she is not running projects, Carrie makes good use of running gear stuffed in one of her filing drawers.
Michael tells visual stories primarily using documentary photography. He comes to CMU after spending nine years as a photojournalist for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, where he photographed stories in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Cuba, India and Guatemala. Michael has degrees in Spanish and Journalism from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He is an avid soccer player and volunteer counselor for Camp STAR (SummerTime Amputee Retreat).
Tim specializes in environmental and individual portraiture, social media applications, branding initiatives and major marketing and communications campaigns. He studied graphic design at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh and continues to be an active member of the visual arts community, creating large-scale public sculptures and developing educational community-based arts projects for area youth. When he’s not photographing the landscape of campus or building sculptures, Tim maintains a rustic river cabin that his grandparents built and aspires to be a professional angler and fishing guide in his spare time.
Gretchen is a video producer who blends animation, visual storytelling and sound to tell stories that will change lives. She earned her chops producing web and social video products that advocate, educate and earn for nonprofits, arts and entrepreneurial sectors, and ultimately traded her own business for Tartan plaid. Gretchen is really good at packing hardly any necessities into saddlebags and taking off for however long (or longer) on motorcycle trips to go camping wherever. Look for her on winding roads.
Assistant Video Producer
Ben applies his expertise in videography and media production prowess to cover a wide range of CMU events, producing video content for the homepage, social media and other university websites. In his previous position as chief technology officer and video production specialist at a local startup, Altar TV, he filmed bands all around the country, an experience that helped him learn the best ways to capture live events on video. Ben majored in digital filmmaking and media production at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh.
