Bio

Tim is a product designer, businessman, and teacher who works with companies and organizations to make products and services useful and profitable. A founder of Pittsburgh product development firm Daedalus, Tim has engaged with the firm’s designers, engineers, and user researchers to help clients both small and large make successful design decisions.

After 30+ years of building Daedalus, Tim began a second career as a faculty member at Carnegie Mellon University, capitalizing on his consulting experience to teach in the MIIPS program at the Integrated Innovation Institute and the MBA program in the Tepper School of Business. He enjoys following the careers of his former students, giving advice when asked, making connections, and staying in touch. Additionally, Tim organizes design thinking workshops for major corporations and universities.

Tim is a Fellow of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), and has served as a board member of the Association of Professional Design Firms, and as president of the Pittsburgh chapter of the MIT Enterprise Forum. A graduate of UCLA, Tim has taught at The Ohio State University and is the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for the study of design history. He has consulted or lectured on design in Korea, Ukraine, Taiwan, and Singapore. In 2010, he was the commencement speaker for CMU’s Master’s of Product Development (now MIIPS) program. Prior to founding Daedalus, Tim worked for Henry Dreyfuss Associates, Westinghouse Electric, and Bally Design.

In his spare time, Tim can be found in the Union Project's ceramic studio, in the gym, playing tennis, or riding a bike. His recent travel includes Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, France, Spain, and Portugal. Up next, Tim will be embarking on a safari to Kenya & Uganda. When traveling, Tim always has his sketchbook and watercolors along. Originally from California, he often can be found with family on a beach near San Francisco or Los Angeles.
