Upper-Class Move-In

We hope you're excited to start another year at Carnegie Mellon University! You can find all your need-to-know information about moving in here, but feel free to email us with any other questions.

Move-in Dates: Wednesday, August 25, through Sunday, August 29.

Due to traffic restrictions and to minimize congestion in unloading zones, all upper-class residents must sign up for a move-in timeslot through the Housing Portal. Students who haven't yet selected a move-in time, should log into the Housing Portal to select a timeslot now.

Room Assignment and Roommate Information

Once the information is available, all upper-class students can view their room assignment and the name and email of their roommate(s) under the "My Info" tab of Student Information Online (SIO).

In most cases, only the name of the roommate that you will be sharing a bedroom with will show up in the SIO. In cases of multi-room apartments or suites, the names of your apartment-mates and suite-mates can be viewed in the Housing Portal by clicking on the link located in the "Housing Assignment" section of the portal Home page.

Building Access

Residents assigned to any building that uses a hard key to enter (Fairfax or Shady Oak) should pick up their keys at the Residence on Fifth service desk, which is open from 8:30 a.m. through midnight Monday through Friday, and 10 a.m. through midnight Saturday and Sunday. Please have a form of photo identification (drivers license or passport) with you to pick up your keys.

For buildings that use electronic locks, please visit the Housing Services Access page.

Mail and Packages

As a reminder, all mail and packages must be sent to the residents' SMC box, for pick-up at the Cohen University Center. Under no circustances should packages be sent directly to the buildings. Packages left outside of buildings are subject to theft and/or will be returned to the sender.

Early Arrival Housing Requests

For security and other logistical reasons, residents are not permitted to check into campus housing before the established check-in dates. If you have an extenuating circumstance, the early arrival form will be available in the Housing Portal from July 15 through August 17.

Pre-Approved Early Arrival Groups

If you are a member of a fall athletic team, orientation, move-in volunteer or another such group, you do not need to apply for an individual request since group requests were submitted by the coach or advisor. If you have questions about your early arrival status, please contact your coach or group advisor.

If You Are An Individual

The Early Arrival application will be available July 15th. We recommend that you submit your request as early as possible for consideration; however, it must be made at least three business days in advance of your requested arrival date. Submissions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis and making a request does not guarantee approval. Applications submitted after August 17 will receive an automatic denial.

How to Apply for an Early Arrival

  • Log in to the Housing Portal.
  • Select "Apply for Housing."
  • Select the "Academic Year 2021-2022" option and click "Apply Now."
  • Click on the “Fall Early Arrival Request” page at the end of the application.
  • Select a date between August 18 and August 25 and include your reason for the request.
  • Click “continue” to submit your request.
  • You will receive an email acknowledging your application has been received.
  • You will receive a separate email when the status of your request is determined.

Many individuals requesting early arrival move-in are denied with limited exceptions. Residents are provided with the official move-in dates early in the year so that appropriate living and travel arrangements can be made. Please note that residents may not store their belongings in their fall assignment prior to their actual move-in. If students arrive early without pre-approval and gain access to their rooms, they will be charged $100 per night through their student accounts.
