Welcome, Students

Welcome, Students

The Class of 2015 has arrived at Carnegie Mellon University, where our world-renowned faculty will prepare them to work across disciplines on solving real-world challenges.

Orientation Week events will introduce these newest members of our CMU family — future creators, innovators and entrepreneurs — to the university, the city and each other.

Among the highlights are Playfair on Monday evening. Billed as "the largest icebreaker ever," students and staff will gather on the football field for games, activities and mingling.

Community Collage will be held on Tuesday under the Baker Lawn tent. Here, current students will present amazing stories, personal reflections and cultural performances showcasing the diversity of the CMU community.

At the Zero-Waste Dinner later that day, students will learn how everyday actions — such as minimizing how much food and trash we throw away — can make a big difference for the environment.

The event is co-sponsored by Eco-Reps and the Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research.

Students will celebrate the beginning of their academic career at Convocation, which takes place under the Baker Hall Lawn tent on Thursday.

CMU alum Jeffrey Zaslow, senior writer and columnist for The Wall Street Journal and co-author of The Last Lecture with Randy Pausch, will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony, starting at 5:00 p.m.

Students were given the book before arriving on campus. Throughout the week, the students are meeting in small groups, led by faculty and staff mentors, to discuss college, life and what it means to "really achieve your childhood dreams."

The week closes with the Olympic-style games of Annual House Wars on Friday evening followed by a talent show on Saturday.
