20th Anniversary Events

In 2015, Carnegie Mellon University celebrated the 20th Anniversary of the Center for Africanamerican Urban Studies and the Economy (CAUSE). Over the past two decades, our speakers series and conferences brought nearly 150 leading scholars of the black urban experience to Carnegie Mellon University and the Pittsburgh region. The Center’s postdoctoral program supported the scholarship of seventeen fellows over the past twenty years. Fellows spent an entire year at the Center carrying out research on book-length projects. CAUSE-supported research projects resulted in the publication of over a dozen books and numerous scholarly essays in professional journals and edited volumes.

Moreover, the Center’s recent international conference on Global Black Power as well as three earlier national conferences reinforced CAUSE’s contributions to scholarship and publications in the field of African American urban history and social policy. Featuring cutting edge research on questions of race, cities, and socioeconomic change in 20th century America, the Center’s innovative conferences alone established the intellectual foundation for the publication of three agenda-setting publications (2004, 2009, and 2012) on different aspects of the black urban experience.

Building upon the research, publications, and public service activities of CAUSE over the past twenty years, we held a series of activities to mark 20 years of scholarship on the black experience.
