The Green Design research programs aim to reduce environmental damage by:

  • Lowering or eliminating discharges to the environment
  • Minimizing the use of non-renewable resources
  • Determining the sustainable use levels of renewable resources

Our interdisciplinary research programs will encourage safe economic growth by developing pollution preventing green design tools for industry, government, and the public. Our research is centered on four strategic thrusts:

  1. Sustainable Infrastructure
  2. Energy and Environment
  3. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
  4. Environmental Management

Given the interdisciplinary and interdependencies between the environment, economics, and policy, it is often difficult to classify our research into a single category. You may find work in one area that could be classified in another.

The Green Design Institute also has two laboratories that focus on specific sub-areas of interest:

Design Decisions Laboratory

Laboratory for Carbon Footprinting
