Data-Driven Decision Making

The Finance Division employed the use of Excel4apps, an Excel-based ad hoc financial reporting solution that delivers real-time reporting and analysis. This tool has enhanced the university’s ability to make data-driven decisions while improving process flows and has become a key factor for increased analysis. The financial forecasts and budgets, created by campus units in conjunction with the Budget and Planning Office and subsequently approved by university leadership and the Board of Trustees, benefited from the increased analysis and transparency of the details supporting the figures.

The analysis and re-organization of spend category management to leverage CMU’s overall purchasing efficiencies within a category/commodity also enhanced data-driven decision-making. This enabled us to realize financial value for the university, as well as to provide relationship value to our internal partners with a consistent point of contact and process.
