Faces of Work launches this year's program with an exciting event featuring Andrzej Wajda's Wałęsa: Man of Hope. Danuta Wałęsa, wife of former Polish President Lech Wałęsa and a character in the film, will make a special guest appearance. Audiences will enjoy an interactive, post-screening discussion with famed writer Piotr Adamowicz and with Oscar Swan, a professor of Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of Pittsburgh. The Opening Night Reception will feature a variety of traditional Polish cuisine, as well as a lavish selection of wine and beer. Come enjoy a celebration of film, culture, and everything Polish!

This special event is a tribute and dedication to Dr. Paul Goodman's legacy as a filmmaker, professor, and friend. CMU's Opening Night Event will feature a screening of Paul's award-winning film Shipbreakers, a compelling approach to a largely unknown industry. The film is both eye-opening and beautifully shot, providing insight into critical issues surrounding human rights and the environment. As the producer of Shipbreakers, Paul has been recognized this year with a Best Producer of Documentary Film Award at the Madrid International Film Festival! Guests will be treated to a reception featuring delectable food from Pittsburgh's best Indian restaurant, Coriander India Grill. An intriguing panel discussion featuring Director Ralph Vituccio, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Assistant Managing Editor Mark Roth, and University of Pittsburgh Political Science Professor Michael Goodhart will be moderated by Roger Rouse, professor of Global Studies at the University of Pittsburgh. Friends, family, former colleagues, and admirers of Paul's are encouraged to come take part in this special commemoration of a truly accomplished individual.

Faces of Work is excited for another year of fantastic short films! Professional and amateur directors alike have submitted an impressive selection of original work to be judged by a panel of experts. Each film runs a maximum of 8 minutes and centers around the theme of work. There will be a First Prize, Second Prize, Third Prize, and Honorable Mention, and each winner will recieve a cash prize. A reception will be provided, and admission is free!

Guest Artist Nego Gato Buy Tickets

Accompanying our screening of the Palme d'Or nominated film GriGris will be an exhilarating performance from Afro Brazilian Music and Dance Ensemble, Nego Gato. Under the direction of Jose Sena, the troupe draws its inspiration from Brazil's multicultural fusions with African traditions. Nego Gato employs techniques from Samba, Brazilian martial arts, gymnastics and acrobatics, all to the rhythmic beats of live percussion and traditional instruments.

Closing Night Event Buy Tickets

Faces of Work will conclude with a heartfelt screening of Sweet Dreams, an inspiring story of the all-women drumming ensemble who opened up an ice cream shop in Rwanda. Following the film, audiences will enjoy a special discussion with film director and Academy Award-winning editor, Lisa Fruchtman. A Closing Night Reception will feature homemade ice cream from local Pittsburgh favorite, Dave & Andy's!
