Staying Alert While Working

The sudden rise of Pokémon Go! has reminded us here at EH&S of the importance of minimizing distractions when working in laboratories. Clearly, don’t play computer games while working in laboratories, but also be aware of the distractions of background music and other diversions while working. Listening to music with ear buds is frowned upon since it may prevent you from hearing warning sounds and calls from co-workers, or some alarms for equipment or even building evacuations.

Also, in safety training, we talk about the importance of not performing lab work when you are overtired (does that ever happen to you?) Do not work in the lab when you may be under the effects of alcohol (i.e., Friday night Happy Hour) or drugs, whether prescription or over-the-counter, such as allergy-related medications.
