Safety Committees-Environmental Health & Safety - Carnegie Mellon University

Shop Safety Committee

The Shop Safety Committee (SSC) meets quarterly and includes representatives from all departments that have shops where students are working. This committee serves as an advisory board with Environmental Health & Safety to the campus community. They recommend procedures and guidance to the University for Best Practices for our student in shops that utilize high powered machinery. The committee also serves as a forum that will foster a culture of safety within our machines shops.

Shop and fabrication activities play an important role in the education of many Carnegie Mellon students in the arts, sciences and engineering. Safety is a shared responsibility that involves the institution, the user, and staff. University guidelines have been developed which help define these safety standards, as well as roles, responsibilities and authority. These guidelines apply to department heads, shop managers, shop staff, student shop managers, students, monitors, and partners. Comprehensive safety emerges only when all groups are working together and safety is incorporated into all aspects of the job.
