I am interesting in early object categorization and how, among other things, infants utilize sources of motion to distinguish between different ontological kinds (i.e., animate and inanimate objects). Understanding how and when infants make this distinction is an important ability not least because it is one way infants encode experience and learn about the world around them.

Area of Interest: My current questions lie at the nexus between Cognitive Science and
Philosophy of Science, and center on mechanistic explanations as a subset of the greater
family of causal explanations. Do we indeed have a bias toward mechanism as the basis
for explanations, especially in the sciences? What do we do in cases where mechanisms
are simply unavailable to our investigation (a prominent example in this case is gravity)?
The invention of scientific measurements and theoretical constraints consists my other
branch of inquiry.

I am interested in how the medial temporal lobe (MTL) encodes the spatio-temporal context necessary to bind events and objects into a coherent story, and how the prefrontal cortex (PFC) integrates task demands and contextual cues supplied from the MTL to selectively retrieve information from neocortical areas. Further, how do these and other structures interact to support not only the learning of individual episodes, but the generalization of information into context-independent semantic knowledge?

I work with artificial neural networks in order to better understand the neural mechanisms that support complex cognitive processes.
