Study Abroad Programs and Scholarships
The Department of Modern Languages encourages all students—particularly Modern Languages majors and minors—to study abroad. We administer summer study abroad programs in China, Germany, and Spain. In addition, there are numerous options for study abroad for a semester, academic year, or during the summer in a wide variety of countries around the world, including in Doha, Qatar, where Carnegie Mellon has a branch campus. In collaboration with the Office of International Education, Modern Languages faculty members work with students to help them select a program.

Study Abroad Scholarships
Our department, along with the Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, offers study abroad scholarships for students to study for a semester, full year, or summer overseas. Scholarships can be put towards tuition, room and board, airfare and/or book expenses when participating in any accredited study abroad program. A printable document with more information about these awards is available [pdf] as a fillable form.
A well-planned study abroad program will allow a student to receive credit for study abroad and graduate on time. There are additional opportunities for short-term, non-credit study abroad experiences. Many students are able to use their Carnegie Mellon funding for study abroad. We encourage you to visit the university's Office of International Education and Study Abroad websites. They may be helpful for students who are deciding whether to pursue a study abroad program.
