I have been teaching first-year writing courses at CMU in Qatar since 2007 and also serve on the Dean’s Academic Council representing the Humanities and Social Sciences faculty. I was elected to the Executive Committee of the TESOL International Association in 2015, serving as the 51st President of the association in 2016-17.

My research focuses on the development and assessment of second language literacy abilities.Most recently I have received two National Priorities Research Program grants from the Qatar National Research Fund: Improving Reading Skills in the Middle School Science Classroom (August 2012-January 2016) and Learning4TeachingQatar: Examining Qatari teachers’ experiences of professional development in English language teaching (September 2015 – August 2016).

I am also the author of two books: Assessing writing, assessing learning (2010, University of Michigan Press) and One on one with second language writers: A guide for writing tutors, teachers, and consultants (2009, University of Michigan Press).
