Bio

I was born and raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and I’ve been teaching fiction and poetry courses at Carnegie Mellon since 2013.  I received an MFA in poetry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop.  I’m the author of a collection of poems, Cultural Studies, and I co-edited an anthology of contemporary American poetry titled The New Census.

My fiction has been awarded the Narrative Prize, the Playboy College Fiction Prize, the Michener-Copernicus Award, and fellowships from the Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing and the National Endowment for the Arts. My stories have appeared in Ploughshares, Narrative, Playboy, Oxford American, Virginia Quarterly Review, and American Short Fiction, and have been anthologized in Best American Nonrequired Reading and Best New American Voices.  I’m currently at work on a novel and on a book-length nonfiction project.
