Bio

Dr. Byron Martin joined Carnegie Mellon as the assistant vice provost for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in December 2021. In this role, Martin serves as a strategic partner and leader in the Office of the Vice Provost for DEI and Chief Diversity Officer, working with the entire campus community to support CMU’s mission and diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) strategic priorities. He partners closely with the Title IX Initiatives Office and the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion. He also supports the work of the DEI leads within academic and administrative units and supports central professional development initiatives around DEIB, multiculturalism and institutional isms. Additionally, is an intellectual partner to the vice provost for DEI and chief diversity officer in the areas of campus climate and assessment. 

Prior to joining CMU, Martin served as the interim assistant provost for Inclusion at Valparaiso University where he was responsible for the creation and implementation of inclusion and equity-related programs and initiatives, working to strengthen the institutional climate while fostering a safe, welcoming and respectful campus community for all students, faculty and staff members. He has also served in roles in international and intercultural engagement and Student Affairs at Valparaiso. Prior to that, he worked at Abilene Christine University, where he was the director of Multicultural Enrichment. 

Martin holds a Ph.D. in leadership for the advancement of learning and service from Cardinal Stritch University, a master of education degree in higher education, and a bachelor of science degree in psychology from Abilene Christian University.
