Risk Mitigation Strategy

Carnegie Mellon’s risk mitigation strategy is inspired by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Hierarchy of Controls. We are implementing each of these controls to ensure a comprehensive mitigation of COVID-19 exposure on campus.

Substitution/Containment Controls; Changes to campus density, Increase of health promotion/monitoring to the CMU campus; Remote work/instruction; Symptom screening; Testing; Contact tracing; Self-isolation
Engineering Controls; Physical changes to the CMU campus; Modification of spaces to support physical distancing (plexiglass barriers, less furniture, etc.); Enhanced HVAC, sanitation and disinfection; Access management to exterior doors
Administrative Controls; Change the way we experience CMU; Staggered work schedules; Physical distancing; Communications, training and signage
Individual Controls; Personal protective equipment and health-protecting behaviors; Facial coverings; Frequent hand-washing/hand sanitizer
