Touchdown Spaces

Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh campus has assigned new outdoor spaces and tents and several indoor common areas and classrooms as "touchdown spaces" where students can spend time between classes during the fall 2020 semester. The spaces are listed below and identified with signage across campus.

Students utilizing touchdown spaces should be mindful of all in-person activity and space guidelines. Additionally, students must wear masks, abide by posted capacity limits, and follow social distancing guidelines, as well as other health and safety best practices.

Outdoor Spaces & Tents

Ten large tents and 15 smaller canopies are available throughout campus. The tents, which do not include side panels or electricity, have a roof covering and include 20 folding chairs. The canopies are big enough to safely hold between 8-10 people.

While use of the canopies and converted spaces are on a first-come, first-served basis, seats in the tents can be reserved individually or for small groups using CMU’s 25Live scheduling application.

Similar to indoor spaces, each tent will have hand-sanitizing stations and will be cleaned with electrostatic sprayers daily.

Tent Locations:

  • Baker Hall and College of Fine Arts lawns
  • Cohon Center's Merson Courtyard
  • FMS building patio
  • Tepper Quad
  • Outside Hamburg Hall, Hamerschlag Hall, Wean Hall, and Gates & Hillman

Additional Outdoor Spaces:

  • Seating areas under the vaulted ceilings at the north and south ends of the Purnell Center for the Arts and Cohon University Center
  • Stone benches along the tree-lined walkway in the Tepper Quad have been turned into tables with a chair at each end
  • Chairs between the pillars along the lawn under the Purnell Center and Cohon Center loggias

Indoor Common Areas & Classrooms

Several indoor common spaces and classrooms are also available as "touchdown spaces" for students to use between classes. Nearly all indoor spaces on campus have been modified to promote physical distancing and adhere to capacity guidelines. Indoor spaces will be cleaned consistently throughout the day. Learn more
