On Campus
The Carnegie Mellon campus and its neighborhood offer a rich variety of physical and mental distractions to comfort the visitor after an arduous day.
For mental stimulation, the campus offers its library as well as the Carnegie Library and Museum, the Scaife Gallery, Steven Foster Memorial, the Heinz Chapel and Phipps Conservatory; all of which are only a short walk from the campus. If you're lucky, you may see one of Carnegie Mellon’s varsity football or basketball games, and if your luck holds, you may wish to catch the action at Pitt University, or Duquesne University.
Off Campus
As a city, Pittsburgh may be America's most pleasant surprise. It's small enough to avoid many of the urban ills and large enough to host all the big league entertainment offered elsewhere in the country. In addition to big league sports, there's big league symphony, ballet, theater; some of the best jazz in the world; there's an excellent zoo, one of the world's great museums with one of the world's great dinosaur collections, an excellent science center, superb art galleries, terrific restaurants, plenty of night life, and some things special to Pittsburgh: the view from Mount Washington, the Strip District at four in the morning, a boat ride on the three rivers, to say nothing of the soothing strains of Carnegie Mellon's Kiltie band.
And one of the most pleasant surprises is that it's all within twenty minutes or less of the Carnegie Mellon campus. Carnegie Mellon Conference and Event Services can provide concierge services for conference visitors wishing to enjoy Pittsburgh's social and cultural life. Finally, we offer, when in season and in town, the Pittsburgh Pirates, Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins. They, and their loyal fans, take their sports very seriously.
