Carnegie Mellon University provides two ways to access VMware Software:
VMware Academic Software Licensing Program - provides free downloads for students, faculty, and staff who are taking classes. Due to vendor restrictions, staff not taking classes are not eligible to use VMware Academic Software and may use Enterprise Licensing instead.
VMware Enterprise License Agreement (ELA) - provides discounted software for university administrative, infrastructure, and staff use.
VMware Academic Software Licensing Program
The VMware Academic Software Licensing Program provides free downloads of many popular VMware products for use in science, technology, engineering, and math courses by students and faculty, as well as staff who are currently enrolled in classes.
Students and faculty may also use the software for non-commercial research. (For university administrative and infrastructure purposes or staff licensing, see the Enterprise License Agreement.)
The store contains several popular VMware products. Each student and faculty member may redeem one key per product per year of subscription:
VMware Workstation 15 Pro and 16 Pro
VMware Fusion 11 Pro and 12 Pro
VMware vSphere 6.x and 7.x Enterprise Plus Edition**
VMware vCenter 6.x and 7.x Server Standard Edition**
