Maintenance Schedule: Computing Services

The following chart reflects Computing Services scheduled maintenance windows. Additional outages may occur as a result of unforeseen hardware or software issues. In these cases, the division strives to provide as much notice as possible. As necessary, details are posted to the Computing Services news page.

Administrative Systems

Maintenance scheduled as needed.  Decision to perform maintenance is determined that week. Key users are notified in advance. If critical patches become available, machines may be taken down on short notice--sometimes less than 48 hours.

Note: Typical downtime is between 7 p.m. Friday -7 a.m. the following Monday.

  • Talent Management System
  • FCE
  • Alumni systems
  • Electronic Data Management
Andrew File System Sundays between 4:00 -5:00 a.m. AFS directories and volumes may not be accessible.
Andrew Web Publishing System

Wednesdays and Thursdays between 4:00 - 5:00 a.m.

Publishing through AWPS may not be available during this time, however, web pages published on www.cmu.edu are accessible. 

First and third Saturdays of each month between 7:00 - 9:00 a.m.

Andrew Windows

Sundays between 6:00 - 9:00 a.m.

It is possible that ANY of the following services could be affected, however, the following are typical:

  • MyFiles
  • Roaming Profiles
  • My Dept Files for DSP (File Servers)

The following services run on replicated servers; it is possible but unlikely that they would be affected:

  • Active Directory
  • Pharos Printing
  • WINS

Services with limited impact (only affect specific groups):

  • Microsoft Exchange Email System and BlackBerry Enterprise Server
  • Windows Media Services
  • WSUS (Windows Software Update Service)
Blackboard

As necessary, on off-peak Saturdays from 6:00 - 8:00 a.m. Maintenance notices are posted on the Blackboard web site.

Note: There is no set maintenance schedule since maintenance work is avoided during peak usage times (e.g., beginning of the semester or finals week).

Blackboard may not be available.

Content Management System (CMS) Last Wednesday of each month from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.; additional maintenance announced as needed. Creating, editing and publishing webpages.
Directory Maintenance is performed as needed. Any outages will be announced via normal computing news channels (e.g., official.computing-news, portal).

Directory, Preferred Name are unavailable.

Keyserver License Server Friday evenings from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m. Saturday mornings. This is a redundant service and there normally should not be any downtime.
NetDev Servers (DHCP, DNS, NetReg, etc.) Saturdays between 6:00 - 7:00 a.m. Various web services provided by the network group, including NetReg, CANDO and NISC, may be unavailable during this maintenance window. All real-time critical services are designed to be fully functional during this time, including DNS, DHCP.
Network

First and third Saturdays of each month between 5:00 - 6:00 a.m.

Note: When necessary, other outages may occur. Notice will be provided, typically two weeks in advance.

Depending on the type of maintenance to be performed, ANY of the following MAY be affected as well as additional unforeseen effects. 

  • Email Services (reading and sending, Webmail)
  • Blackboard
  • File Services (AFS, DFS, MyFiles and some departmental servers)
  • Web Services (Carnegie Mellon Portal, www.cmu.edu, www.andrew.cmu.edu,
    some departmental web servers)
  • Web Publishing Systems (AWPS, www.andrew.cmu.edu)
  • Dialup and VPN Networking
  • Software license servers (serving licenses for: 3D Studio Max, Adams, ANSYS, FrameMaker, IMSL, IronCAD Maple, MathCAD, Mathematica, Matlab, Maya, ProEngineer/ProMechanica, SolidWorks, S-Plus)
  • Network Registration Systems (NetReg, QuickReg, AuthBridge)
  • Andrew & Cluster Printing
  • Unix, Linux, and Sun4 .andrew server pools
  • All Computing Services Clusters Machines
  • All Andrew workstations

Typically NOT affected, but exceptions are possible:

  • External Internet connectivity (on-campus computers connected via wired or wireless Ethernet)
  • DNS & DHCP
Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) Tuesdays and Fridays between 6:30 - 7:30 a.m.

Depending on the type of maintenance to be performed, ANY of the following MAY be affected as well as additional unforeseen effects. 

  • ANY service that requires external Internet connectivity (e.g., web browsing outside of www.cmu.edu, reading email from off-campus, VPN service, etc.)
  • Commodity Internet connectivity
  • Research connectivity
  • External e-mail (e-mail will be held then delivered once maintenance is complete)
Portal

First and third Thursdays of each month between 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Portal may not be available. 

Thursdays between 2:00 - 3:00 a.m. and between 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. This is a portal reboot and DOES NOT result in any portal down time.
Urchin Analytics Mondays between 11:00 - 11:59 p.m. Access to Urchin analytics data may not be available during this time.
www.andrew.cmu.edu Thursdays between 4:00 - 5:00 a.m. Publishing through www.andrew may NOT be available during this time and web pages within www.andrew may not be accessible.
