Artificial Intelligence (AI) no longer just lives in the digital realm of social media and e-commerce – it has also become a critical part of physical technologies in healthcare, transportation, communication, manufacturing, and more. Civil and Environmental Engineers use AI to create unique solutions for systems and infrastructure, sustainable design, smart transportation systems, data management, and more.

Though Artificial Intelligence has transformed various industries and engineering disciplines in recent times, to truly integrate AI solutions into practical solutions to Civil and Environmental Engineering problems requires capabilities/talent that are currently not addressed by either computer science or traditional engineering disciplines alone. This program is unique in that it acknowledges the fact that engineers in the future will need to make use of and develop innovations in AI as part of their toolbox when formulating solutions to the problems they face.

The MS program in Artificial Intelligence Engineering in Civil and Environmental Engineering offers students the opportunity to gain mastery of AI while learning how to integrate these approaches within the engineering design process as well as how to integrate engineering domain knowledge into AI solutions. 

The program is designed with a set of core courses that cover the fundamentals of machine learning, deep learning, the systems and toolchains needed to work with AI systems, and the ethics/policy considerations that these solutions require from an engineering perspective. Aside from those fundamentals, students can choose from a broad set of elective courses and a capstone project course that allow them to concentrate on specific sub-disciplines of civil and environmental engineering (e.g., water resources, buildings, transportation) and learn to leverage AI solutions in these contexts. With these skills, graduates would be able to pursue innovative career paths in areas such as intelligent transportation systems, structural health monitoring, facilities management and environmental data analysis, to name a few. 

As the first program of its kind in the nation, graduates of this program will be uniquely positioned for high-demand careers in this burgeoning field within Civil and Environmental Engineering.
