Zhang Awarded Best Poster

PhD candidate Xiaohan Zhang was recently awarded a Best Poster prize at the 7th International Conference on Multiscale Materials Modeling in Berkeley, California. His poster entitled, Peierls Stress, Pile-Ups, and Inertia Effects in Field Dislocation Mechanics, presents about Peierls stress (an important threshold phenomenon of dislocations), the complex interaction between the line defects and supersonic motion of a single dislocation within high stressed body.

Dislocations are loops and curves of defects within lattice and in his work he simulates these types of defects within a mathematical framework (field dislocation mechanics model). Zhang's work looks at how the defects move in material and how crystalline materials behave in the presence of such defects.

Zhang is advised by Professor Amit Acharya.
