Velibeyoglu Awarded Dr. Elio D’Appolonia Graduate Fellowship

Velibeyoglu Awarded Dr. Elio D’Appolonia Graduate Fellowship PhD Candidate Irem Velibeyoglu was selected as the first recipient of the Dr. Elio D’Appolonia Graduate Fellowship. Velibeyoglu completed her undergraduate studies at Middle East Technical University in Ankara, Turkey with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Advised by Assistant Professors Hae Young Noh and Matteo Pozzi, Velibeyoglu is researching smart infrastructure with an emphasis on structural health monitoring, data & risk analysis and the use of wireless sensors on civil engineering related issues.
“It is fantastic I have been awarded Dr. Elio D'Appolonia Fellowship to support my graduate studies,” she says. “I am really grateful for this generous funding opportunity.”
The Dr. Elio D’Appolonia Graduate Fellowship was recently established, with the generosity from the Devendra and Kshama Shukla Foundation, to recognize his impact on the department. Dr. Appolonia, was a CEE faculty member from 1948 to 1956 and truly helped to define and develop the multidisciplinary, creative problem-solving nature of civil engineering at CMU that remains a hallmark of the program.
