CMU-R Benefits from MasterCard Foundation's Director's Grant

The MasterCard Foundation works with visionary organizations to provide greater access to education, skills training and financial services for people living in poverty, primarily in Sub-Saharan Africa. As one of the largest, independent foundations, its work is guided by its mission to advance learning and promote financial inclusion in order to alleviate poverty. Each year, the Foundation provides each member of their board Director’s Grants which are used to support youth education and financial inclusion projects of their choice.

We are delighted that board member Dr. Jendayi Frazer chose our Innovators Forward Fellowship Fund (IFFF) for her grant. This fund was set up to allow access to our master’s program to qualified African students who are in financial need.

Dr. Frazer is a Managing Partner at Africa Exchange Holdings and on the Board of Directors of the East Africa Exchange. She is the former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs. From 2009 to 2014, she was a distinguished public service professor at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) where she was on the faculty of Heinz College’s School of Public Policy and Management. During her time at CMU, she acted in an advisory capacity for the establishment of Carnegie Mellon University in Rwanda (CMU-R).

The gift to CMU-R blends well with The MasterCard Foundation’s mission to advance youth learning and promote financial inclusion to catalyze prosperity in developing countries, particularly in Africa. Carnegie Mellon University's global strategy is focused on creating innovative programs that will have real impact. Our program in Africa has the potential to make meaningful impact, as Africa hosts the youngest population in the world and some of the fastest growing economies. With our graduate programs focused on technology and engineering, CMU-R’s vision is to educate the next generation of African innovators and technology leaders. We are grateful to MasterCard Foundation for supporting our vision.
