Course description: 

This course introduces traditional and emerging technologies for monitoring, controlling and managing the generation, distribution, storage and use of electrical power.  Fundamentals of electric power systems will be reviewed so that the students understand the context of the electric power grid.  Emerging renewable energy sources will also be reviewed and the challenges and techniques for integrating renewables will be presented.  Students will learn about traditional and new strategies for operating power systems to best match generation to demand will be studied, including the use of microgrids, islanding, demand response, and storage technologies. 

Learning objectives:

    • Understand fundamentals of power system technology and operations
    • Understand the pros and cons of emerging energy sources
    • Understand techniques and strategies for using ICT to improve the operation of electrical power systems
    • Understand how to assess alternative technologies and operating strategies for power systems, particularly in the African context


After completing this course, students should be able to:
  • Analyze basic power systems
  • Evaluate alternative energy sources in terms of technology, costs, and availability
  • Read the current literature on smart grid developments and assess emerging alternatives for different contexts

Grades are determined by homework assignments, projects, quizzes and exams.
