CMU-SECURE is the preferred wireless network offering the highest level of security for all of your devices, including computers, smartphones, and other devices that support web browsers or login capabilities.

Apple's recent iOS 14 update included a feature called Private Addressing. This enhancement enables Apple devices to use a different MAC address for each Wi-Fi network the device connects to.

While this change will improve security for iOS devices, you may experience challenges connecting to the CMU-DEVICE. Here's how to resolve this issue.

  1. On your iOS device, tap Settings and choose the CMU-DEVICE wireless network.
  2. Make note of the value in the Wi-Fi Address field. This is your MAC address for the selected Wi-Fi network.
  3. Visit the Device Registration tool.
  4. If prompted, log in with your Andrew userID and password.
  5. Scroll down to view a list of registered devices.
  6. Click a device Hostname to edit the device and enter the updated Wi-Fi Address.
  7. Click Save to apply any changes.

The CMU-DEVICE is a campus network that uses private IP address space (not public). A private IP address provides additional security when accessing Internet resources. These devices are not accessible from outside the CMU network so your exposure to threats such as Trojans, viruses and worms is reduced.

It is important to note that the CMU-DEVICE network uses a non-encrypted, lower-security profile than the CMU-SECURE wireless network (which offers a Wi-Fi Protected Access II (WPA2 enterprise) security mode) and there is no Andrew ID authentication. Therefore, we recommend that you use the CMU-SECURE wireless network for computers, smartphones, and other devices that support WPA2 enterprise.

Yes. The CMU-DEVICE network provides full outgoing and incoming access to the Internet. But your devices on this network are not accessible from outside the CMU network because they use a private IP address space. To request a public IP address for a device, contact the Help Center.

  • You must be able to obtain a MAC address in order to register your device on the CMU-DEVICE wireless network.
  • You are permitted up to 100 devices on the CMU-DEVICE wireless network. Contact the Help Center to request additional devices.
  • The CMU-DEVICE network is subject to the same usage guidelines as our wired and other wireless networks.

I no longer want my device to connect to the CMU-DEVICE network. How do I stop my device from finding this network?
