How To Use CMU Voicemail

You can use voicemail from a CMU or other phone, from your email, or online.

From your CMU phone, press the Messages button then follow the prompts.
  1. Dial 1-412-268-8600 or your campus phone number.
  2. When the phone answers, press the asterisk (*) button.
  3. When prompted, enter the last five digits of your campus phone number.
  4. Press pound (#).
  5. When prompted, enter your PIN.
  6. Press pound (#). Follow the prompts to perform specific voicemail actions.

New voicemail messages will display in your Inbox and the voicemessages label. Use the vociemessages label to locate your voicemail quickly.

  1. Open the email that contains the voice message

    • CMU caller - subject will include name and phone number.
    • External caller - subject will list unknown sender with details in the message body
  2. Double-click the attached message to listen to it. You can save, file, forward, or delete the email with the voice message attached.

IMPORTANT: If you delete an email that contains a voice message, it is also deleted from the voicemail system.

Voicemail Manager
  1. Log in to Voicemail ManagerNote: To log in from off-campus, first connect to VPN.
  2. Double-click a message to listen to it. Note: For detailed instructions, visit Voicemail Manager Guide.

Cisco Jabber

  1. Open Cisco Jabber, and then log in.
  2. Follow the instructions in the Cisco Jabber Guide to access your voicemail.

  • Verify that you are entering the correct PIN when you dial into your voicemail.
  • Verify that you are not locked out of your voicemail account because you entered your PIN incorrectly three times in total.
  • To reset your PIN, visit Voicemail Manager.

Voicemail messages remain in the Trash for one day when you delete them from your email, after which they are automatically deleted. To immediately delete a message, do one of the following: 

From a web browser

  1. Visit voicemail.cmu.edu.
  2. Select the voicemail message and click Delete.
  3. Select Messages > Deleted, then click Empty deleted items to delete permanently it.

From your phone

  1. Press the voicemail button, enter your pin.
  2. Press 3 for old messages, press 1 for saved messages.
  3. As message begins to play, press 3.
  4. Choose:
    1. Review Old Messages (Option 3)
    2. Deleted Messages (Option 2)
    3. Permanently Delete (Option 2)
    4. Yes, I Am Sure (Option 1)
    5. All Messages (Option 2)

From Jabber

  1. Click the voicemail icon and then right-click on the voicemail to be deleted.
  2. Click delete. Note: You can delete multiple voicemails at one time by clicking on a voicemail then press and hold the shift key while you select other voicemails.
  3. Click Voicemail > Trash.
  4. Right-click in the window, then click Empty Voicemail to delete the message permanently, 

Empty your deleted voice message mailbox. Voicemails in this mailbox count against your total quota.

Voicemail messages are copied to both your voicemail box and Andrew email, except in cases where the department does not permit it. 

You can access voicemails from email, phone, Cisco Jabber, or Voicemail Manager. Messages are synchronized across these options, so deleting a message from any of these technologies deletes it across all.

We recommend using email to manage voicemails.

When you click the attachment in the email, the voicemail plays. As with any email and attachment, use caution when opening. Check the full email header before opening the message if you suspect a phishing attempt.

An email header, usually hidden, is a block of information about the message that includes the sender, the recipient, the date, sending and receiving time stamps, and the servers that handle the transfer of the message.

Follow these steps to view and check an email header for the most commonly used email clients.

  1. Visit the Information Security Office and follow the instructions to view the full header for your email.
  2. In the email header window, search for these exact terms: Received or Received-from. The email may be a phishing message if you find one or both terms in the header. Do not open the attached voicemail. Instead, do one of the following:
