Henry
Hornbostel's classic architecture style can be seen
in the buildings that surround the Mall: Doherty Hall, Hamerschlag
Hall, Porter Hall and Baker Hall. (Wean Hall, which also lines
the Mall, features a modern style of architecture.) Students
and faculty members frequent this outdoor area as they use
the nearby academic facilities.
As a center of
campus, the Mall is used throughout the year for a variety of events.
An orientation picnic for new students, music concerts, and convocation
and commencement ceremonies take place here.
Along the walkway
of the Mall, students race miniature mobile robots during the Mobot
competition each spring.
In the fall of
2000, Carnegie Mellon's Mall took center stage in the national
spotlight when it was used as a location for a presidential campaign
rally. A crowd of 16,000 packed the lawn to participate in the
political event.
