UC Facts
The University Center opened for business on August 23, 1996. Planning for the University Center began in the mid-eighties, in an effort to improve the University’s quality of life. A University jury selected Michael Dennis & Associates' plan for in a national design competition. Urban Design Associates (UDA) of Pittsburgh assisted Dennis' Boston-based firm. The resulting 300,000 square foot building was built and has been called the 'crown jewel' of campus.
The center has become a hub for students, faculty, and staff who pay multiple visits each day for meals, meetings, study groups, live music and performances, films, and other activities. In the Center, you will find a dining gallery with many options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The University Bookstore and Art Store are located in the University Center, where you can find textbooks, Carnegie Mellon apparel, art supplies, and much more.
The University Center's recreational fitness component includes a full-size gymnasium for basketball or volleyball, a weight room with a complete set of Cybex weight machines, racquetball/squash courts, a 25-yard lap swimming pool, a separate diving well, and a studio for spinning classes and group exercise classes. A current Carnegie Mellon University ID is required for all fitness equipment.
