Aris Candris (E’74, ’78), CEO of Westinghouse Electric Company

Join fellow alumni, students and members of the Pittsburgh community as the College of Engineering Leadership Speakers Series presents its inaugural lecturer, Aris Candris (E’74, ’78), CEO of Westinghouse Electric Company.

Following Dr. Candris' Keynote presentation, Candris will join Dean Pradeep K. Khosla and engineering faculty for a lively interactive discussion on energy and nuclear power.

As the world's population increases, global demand for electricity could double within 50 years. Fossil energy is not sustainable, and CO2  emissions must be significantly reduced over the next few decades to mitigate the consequences of climate change. To meet the burgeoning need for energy, it's essential that the U.S. develops a comprehensive energy plan that utilizes different technologies, including nuclear power.

Westinghouse Electric Company has been a leader in providing nuclear solutions both in the U.S. and abroad. Since 1957, when the company developed its first commercial nuclear plant, Westinghouse has focused on creating sustainable energy, a goal that is shared by Carnegie Mellon.

The university and Westinghouse enjoy a long collaborative history. After WWII, the school established nuclear research facilities thanks to significant support from Westinghouse. Fast forward to today, the company continues to support leading-edge research activities at Carnegie Mellon, which allows us to provide students with deep technical knowledge and skills. Our graduates often pursue successful careers at companies like Westinghouse. In fact, several members of Westinghouse's executive management team are College of Engineering alumni, including CEO Dr. Aris Candris.

To meet the energy challenges that lie ahead, Westinghouse and the college are committed to creating innovative technologies and training engineers who will develop abundant, safe and environmentally sound sources of energy. This forward-thinking outlook, along with significant professional and educational opportunities, has established Pittsburgh as a world-renowned energy research hub.
