AB Lectures and AB Special Events Present: Big Freedia

Friday, October 1, 2010

7:00pm, University Center, Rangos 3

"The lecture/workshop series involves "Big Freedia", a Bounce Music recording artist from New Orleans, "Altercation", one of Freedia's dancers (and a dance instructor herself) and "Rusty Lazer", Freedia's live DJ and creative manager, as Cultural Ambassadors and Translators.

Part one is a lecture on the significance of Bounce Music relating to identity of all types (class, race, gender, sexuality). All participants will expound on these topics with personal theories of identity, inclusion, musical cultural development, cultural reciprocation, the inter-relatedness of movement and consciousness, the history of this sacred dance and it's place in the New Orleans canon, and how exercising personal space can inform many aspects of our lives and identity. Freedia, Altercation and Rusty would then be available for a Q&A.

Part two is a workshop in which Altercation explains the mechanics of "Bounce" dance movement in a participatory setting. Beginning with stretching and basic movements, Altercation encourages partnering up of the audience to form lines of trust and encouragement within the group. Freedia and Altercation will then move around the room using touch to help isolate the movement for individuals and give encouragement.

Freedia's dj Rusty will be playing a bounce dj set for party after the lecture.
