Author Mark H. Kryder has spent over 40 years building and leading research teams in academia and industry. After receiving his PhD at Caltech, Prof. Kryder first taught and did research at the University of Regensburg in Germany, then led a research team at the IBM T. J. Watson Research Center before joining Carnegie Mellon University where he founded the Magnetics Technology Center and the Data Storage Systems Center. After 20 years at Carnegie Mellon, Prof. Kryder became Senior Vice President, Research and Chief Technology Officer for Seagate Technology for nine years. In 2007, he retired from Seagate and is now a University Professor at Carnegie Mellon. During this talk, Prof. Kryder will give a description of his journey of more than 40 years of carrying out and leading research on magnetic memory technologies and then describe lessons he learned with regard to innovation, teaching and leadership.
