Graduate Student Service Awards

Purpose

The purpose of the Graduate Student Service Award is to encourage and recognize a graduate student who has advanced the interests of Carnegie Mellon graduate students, improved the quality of life for graduate students on campus and/or contributed to the larger and/or surrounding academic community. The award recipient will receive an engraved tray and a monetary honorarium. Honorable mentions will receive letters of commendation.

Eligibility

All Carnegie Mellon graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding service in their department, college or the broader academic community are eligible for nomination. Students who have been nominated in the past or received honorable mentions are welcome to be nominated again. Previous winners are ineligible for nomination.

Committee

The Committee will consist of at least two faculty members, two staff members, two graduate students (the current GSA President and one past recipient of the award), and two undergraduate students. The Chairperson of the Committee (a non-voting member) will be the Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Education.

Nomination Requirements

Nominations may be submitted by any member of the Carnegie Mellon community, undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty and alumni, and should describe the qualities and activities that make the nominee an excellent candidate for the award. The Committee Chair must receive nomination packages by Friday, February 15, 2008. Send nominations to Suzie Laurich-McIntyre, Assistant Vice Provost for Graduate Education, 533 Warner Hall or email materials to grad-ed@cmu.edu.

Each nominator is expected to compile the following packet of materials for submission:

  • A nomination letter addressed to the Graduate Student Service Award Committee summarizing the individual’s accomplishments.
  • Additional letters of recommendation from faculty, staff, current and former students, or other colleagues who have substantive knowledge of the nominee’s service activities.  Two to five letters will be accepted, in either hard copy or e-mail.
  • Additional supporting materials to represent the quality of the nominee’s service accomplishments and information about the direct service. This might include executive summaries, program/service information initiated by the nominee, promotional materials, brochures, and/or other materials. Nominators may request information from the graduate student nominee, but are not required to do so.

Selection

The Committee will choose one person to be recommended to the Provost as the recipient of the 2007-2008 Graduate Student Service Award. The winner will be announced campus-wide the beginning of April.
