Fall 2009 offerings:

Developing and using rubrics

Monday, Sept. 14, 4:30-6pm, Cyert Hall A-70

A rubric is a scoring tool that explicitly communicates your performance expectations to students. In this hands-on workshop we will discuss the merits of using rubrics and then spend time developing them.

Using computer visualizations and simulations in teaching

Tuesday, Sept. 29, 10:30am-Noon, Cyert Hall 279

In this seminar, we will review key findings on how computer visualizations and simulations best support student learning and then take those findings to generate effective strategies for incorporating visualization and simulation tools in your teaching.

Teaching with case studies

Thursday, Oct 8, Noon-1:30pm, Cyert Hall A-70

Case studies can be wonderful teaching tools, but thoughtful planning is necessary to make the most of case-based discussions. In this workshop, we will share experiences using case studies and discuss strategies for planning and facilitating productive case-based discussions.

Motivating students to work productively in groups

Wednesday, Oct. 28, 9:30-11am, Cyert Hall A-70

In this seminar, we will draw on the latest research to explore how instructors can structure, support, and assess groupwork in order to motivate greater student involvement and in turn deeper learning.

Structuring group projects to realize intellectual potential

Monday, Nov. 9, Noon-1:30pm, Cyert Hall A-70

This seminar will provide a synthesis of the research on what facilitates versus impedes effective information processing within groups, as well as concrete strategies instructors can use to help student groups achieve their intellectual potential.
