Motivating students to learn

Tuesday, January 31, 10:30 - Noon, Cyert Hall A-70

Students have different levels and types of motivation that influence what they do (or do not do) to learn. What are the factors that most influence student motivation, either positively or negatively? In this interactive workshop, we will discuss theories of motivation and how they apply to teaching, exploring a range of strategies to engage students more fully in learning.

Incorporating writing in your courses

Thursday, February 16, 1:30-3:00, Cyert Hall A-70

Students’ writing skills can greatly enhance or hinder their ability to convey their understanding of the subject matter of a course.  Furthermore, writing can facilitate the learning process itself. In this seminar, we will introduce a rationale for writing across the curriculum, discuss writing assignments appropriate for a range of classes, and analyze assignments designed to develop particular skills across a variety of disciplines.

Responding effectively and efficiently to student writing

Thursday, March 1, 1:30 - 3:00, Cyert Hall A-70

Some instructors experience uneasiness in assessing their students’ writing. The task often feels daunting: How can I get my students to improve their writing without spending all my time writing comments? How can I grade fairly when writing is so subjective? In this session, we will discuss effective and efficient strategies to provide students with helpful feedback and grade their writing.

Working productively with TAs

Wednesday, March 28, Noon - 1:30, Cyert Hall A-70

How can we work most effectively with our TAs to provide a coherent and productive learning experience for students? In this workshop, we will identify issues that arise when working with teaching assistants, including undergraduate and international TAs. We will discuss a range of useful strategies and how to apply them in your own context.
