Summit 2008 Classes Now Available!
Participants will choose one morning class for all 3 days at Summit, and one afternoon class for each day.
Acrylic Painting
Do the works of Picasso, Andy Warhol, and Van Gogh move you? Want to learn a
few of their skills? In this class, you will have the opportunity to study the
basics of painting, from oil to acrylic. This class will not disappoint. Learn
from a painting pro and walk away from SUMMIT with a memorable object that you
painted!
Balloon Twisting
Do you have a fear of clowns? If so, this class may or may not be the
class for you, but either way, you will be prepared to entered the circus after
completing this balloon twisting course. Learn how to make poodles, hats, and
maybe even an alien aircraft out of balloons. This will not be a poppin' good
time (Get it? No balloons will be popping!), but rather hoppin' fun time!
Black and White
Photography
There's more than just pressing the shutter and handing the film over
the counter to photography. Come and learn how REAL photos are made! This class
will provide a brief overview of black and white photography fundamentals. On
top of making a pinhole camera, you will be able to learn how to develop negatives,
printing images, contact sheets and basic skills such as burning and dodging.
Sexology
Sexology is the systematic study of human sexuality. It encompasses all aspects of sexuality, including attempting to characterize "normal sexuality" and its variants. Modern sexology is a multidisciplinary field which uses the techniques of fields including biology, medicine, psychology, statistics, epidemiology, pedagogics, sociology, anthropology, etc to bear on its subject. It studies human sexual development and the development of sexual relationships as well as the mechanics of sexual intercourse and sexual malfunction. Sexology can document the sexuality of special groups, such as handicapped, children, and elderly, and studies sexual pathologies such as sex addiction and child sexual abuse.
Note that sexology is considered descriptive, not prescriptive: it attempts to document reality, not to prescribe what behavior is suitable, ethical, or moral
Sexual Assault Advisor
The Sexual Assault Advisors (SAA) are a volunteer group of students, staff and faculty who meet on a regular basis for training, outreach and education about sexual assault in our community. Sexual Assault Advisors provide confidential support and resource information to survivors of sexual assault. They are trained on a variety of issues including emotional support, medical treatment, and judicial processes. The Sexual Assault Advisors are also involved with campus-wide training and educational programming. Advisors are required to complete 20 hours of training. As such, interested applicants will only be able to participate in Summit meals, Saturday afternoon classes, and evening activities.
Quilting
With the holiday season coming, what could be a better gift to a friend
than a handmade quilt? Learn the basics of quilting and quilting techniques
of hand and sewing machines. No prior experience required.
Reiki
Reiki - also called energy medicine-is an ancient hands-on healing practice
which harnesses what believers call the Universal Life Force - the energy field
that surrounds all beings, including humans. It is the practice of channeling
energy to heal and harmonize, reducing stress and bringing about deep relaxation.
The history and background of Reiki will be covered in this class followed by
hands-on application. At the conclusion of this course, each student will receive
a Reiki I certificate.
Yoga
ASTANGA STYLE (Thurs & Sat)
The physical component of yoga - called Hatha yoga - consists of poses and breathing
techniques that prepare the body for stillness, creating physical strength and
stamina, while allowing the mind to remain calm. You will go through a flow
style of Yoga that will teach you the breath is a very powerful action to release,
realign and regain strength to your body. You will leave refreshed and relax.
All levels are welcome.
HIMALYIAN INFLUENCES (Friday)
This style of Yoga also known as a Hatha form is more pose orientated with the
process of the journey into the poses not the final pose itself. You will learn
and experience, twist, standing poses, stretches, and strength moves. The style
is brought to you from an instructor that has extensive training in many forms
of Yoga and uses the blending of various styles to produce a great overall powerful
class. This is for Beginners as well as those who have experience in Yoga .
Improv
Explore your capacity for humor on the spot. This course enables you to gain
hands-on experience in exercising witticisms in everyday life. You'll have the
opportunity to learn the basics of improv comedy and see how to apply them.
Salsa Dancing
Learn the various flavors and styles of Salsa Dancing! Come ready to get your moves on!
Taekwondo
Gain some beginning experience in the art of Taekwondo!
Puppet Making
Learn how to put on your very own puppet show! Start by designing your character, crafting the puppet, and manipulating it! Then, for added bonus, sign up for scriptwriting on Saturday afternoon and make your story come to life!
Cardio 'ON' the Ball
Remember the big plastic balls people your friends use as a chair in their room?
Learn how to use it the right way! With the stability ball, you can work your
heart and abdominals. It is easy, simple and a great work out. With some strength
and balance exercises that will be taught in this class, you wont need to walk
all the way to the UC or Skibo to work out!
Chinese Calligraphy
Calligraphy is more than just writing letters with fancy tools. Its art in a
different form! Come learn how to working with pure unadorned Chinese letterforms.
This course will introduce the student to the theory and practice of hand-generated
letters. This course provides an in-depth understanding of the basic principles
and techniques of the art of formal writing.
Anime Drawing
Like anime? Crave manga? Want to make your own? Learn how to draw anime in this class! Beginners and experienced hands alike are welcome!
Culinary Arts: Seviche
Learn some cooking skills with the chef and staff of Seviche, a gourmet tapas restaurant!
Knitting
This class will teach students the basic knitting techniques. Facilitator will
provide needles, yarn and directions. Just bring your enthusiasm for a great
hobby! Others who are more experienced knitters should attend to both work on
their projects as well as help to get other students to learn about the joy
of knitting.

Personal Finance
Ever ask yourself, "How much money will I need at various points in the
future?" and "How do I go about getting that money?" Well, come
and learn about budgeting, banking, paying off those student loans, investing,
401Ks, IRAs, and more! This will be an exclusive tutorial on Personal Financial
Planning. This is a fantastic opportunity to ask any questions you have and
to get a hold of your financial life, along with having a fantastic time!
Handwriting Analysis
What does you handwriting say about you? Handwriting is a remarkable reflection
of our personal styles and our patterns of behavior. That is why it has the
potential to reveal so much about our personalities. The ability to understand
the real meaning of handwriting is an extremely valuable asset. Take this course
and you will learn more about this exciting analysis.
Coffee Buzz
In this class we will celebrate coffee and its social significance. We will take a brief look at a brief history of the coffee bean and its evolution. Participants will be able to sample different coffee roasts and try different preparation techniques including: French Press, Percolated, Campfire Coffee, Turkish Coffee, Vacuum Percolator, and Espresso. Students will also be able to roast their own beans. If time permits, we will talk about some of the politics of coffee. Tea will not be discussed or consumed.
Israeli Dancing
Learn basic Israeli dance steps, traditional circle and line dances, and not-so-traditional dances as well! Wear comfortable clothes that you can move around in.
Foosball
Learn the skills of foosball for beginner and intermediate levels. Individual skill development, strategy, and tournament play will all be covered. Different variations of foosball will be covered as well.
Dessert Baking
Bake and decorate desserts! From cookies to cakes, and everything in between. Maybe even some creme brule!

Geocaching
Do you get lost often? Well, hopefully not, but this class will introduce you
to the exciting world of GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. You will
have hands-on practice during Geocaching, using GPS to locate a hidden treasure.

Gun Shooting
Have you ever shot a gun? Have you ever thought about shooting a gun? Then this
is the class for you. You’ll go over good form and safety tips.
Kick Boxing
Powerful cardio class. This class will teach you the basics of cardio kick,
moving, kicking, pivots & self defense moves to non-stop music. The kicks
and punches are taught then put to music for one heck of a power and fun class.
This class is a great way to learn how to get rid of tension in an explosive
fashion.
Massage Therapy
Got too much stress on you? Too many projects? Meetings? Labs? And don't have
time to relax and get a massage? Come with your friends to learn how to give
each other a soothing massage when you need it the most!
Sign Language
Do you want to learn something new and interesting? Sign Language is always
a good skill to have. Learn the basics of sign language so that you can communicate
with the deaf people.
Racquetball
Ever wonder about that bouncing rubber blue ball? Ever stick your head inside a racquetball court and just listen to your voice echo? Learn the basic rules of this great game and gain a lot of hands-on experience in swing technique, types of shots, serves and game play strategy. This course is sure to please!

a look into the unique world of whitewater kayaking. We will work towards learning
how to eskimo roll as well as understand basic safety and paddling techniques.
This class will be a relaxed afternoon in the pool that will help enable students
to work up to a real whitewater kayaking trip!
