Byron Spice

Director of Media Relations, School of Computer Science


Byron Spice is director of media relations for Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science. He prepares news releases, writes Web stories and assists reporters and producers who cover computer science and robotics.

Prior to joining Carnegie Mellon, Byron had an extensive science-writing career in newspapers, covering topics as varied as genomic medicine, nuclear energy, robotics, stem cell research and astronomy. He reported for the Fort Wayne (IN) Journal-Gazette, the Albuquerque (NM) Journal and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. At the latter, he served 16 years as science editor, reporting and editing stories and supervising a staff of medical, science and environmental reporters. A graduate of Indiana University, where he majored in journalism and political science, he has won a number of national, state and local awards for science writing.
