Students come to Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) for many reasons knowing it affords an opportunity to talk privately about issues that are significant for them in a safe, confidential setting. Students sometimes feel confused about why they are feeling upset and perhaps confused about how to deal with it. An initial consultation with a CAPS therapist will clarify options and provide a recommendation to the appropriate mental health resource at Carnegie Mellon or the larger Pittsburgh community.
CAPS also offers consultation to staff, faculty, and parents who have concerns about a student's well-being. Please be aware that while we may offer general advice, any discussion regarding a client of the center necessitates a written consent by the student permitting us to release information, including whether the student has been seen at CAPS.
CAPS services are provided at no cost. There are, however, limits on the number of sessions that we are able to provide. Follow-up psychiatric services and off-campus referrals for longer term therapy are at the client's expense.
