One of the most important items you will need at Carnegie Mellon is your official identification card. Your ID Card identifies you as a member of the Carnegie Mellon community. Your ID Card will be part of your everyday life on campus and is used to access the following:

  • University Housing Residence Halls
  • Computing Services & Computer Clusters/Labs
  • University Libraries
  • Local Port Authority Transit (bus, incline, etc.)
  • Dining Services Meal Plans
  • Computer Store
  • University Center Retail Shops
  • Athletic Facilities

If you completed the online photo submission process before arriving on campus, your printed ID Card will be ready when you arrive on campus. If you have not yet submitted a photo online, visit ID Card Services in The HUB, located in the lower level of Warner Hall.

Plaid Ca$h

One beneficial feature of your ID Card is Plaid Ca$h. Plaid Ca$h is a prepaid, stored-value/debit account that is accessible via your ID Card. It is a convenient, cashless way to pay on and off campus. You can use Plaid Ca$h for textbooks and school supplies . Many of the area's most popular businesses accept Plaid Ca$h; it can be used to pay for restaurant meals, take-out, delivery and more. Your Plaid Ca$h account is open for use as soon as you are enrolled at the university. You can deposit funds on SIO (www.cmu.edu/hub/sio); and, if your parents know your Andrew User ID and your ID Card number, they may also deposit funds into your Plaid Ca$h account online (www.cmu.edu/idplus/plaidcash) using a Visa or MasterCard.

Student Advantage®

A four-year Student Advantage® membership can be added to your ID Card for $45. Receive discounts of up to 50% off at more than 20,000 locations nationwide. If you purchased a Student Advantage® membership prior to your arrival on campus, the Student Advantage® logo, your membership number, and expiration date will appear on the back of your ID Card. If your card does not reflect your Student Advantage® purchase, please visit ID Card Services in The HUB and we will reprint your ID Card. ID Cards for Spouses & Partners

Degree-seeking undergraduate and graduate students can obtain Affiliate Cards for spouses or domestic partners who meet certain eligibility criteria.  Student must provide documentation of their relationship with the sponsored affiliate before an ID Card can be issued.  For more information about Affiliate cards, please visit Frequently Asked Questions.  Information regarding registering a domestic partner can be found in the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs, Warner Hall 3rd floor, 412-268-2075.
