98-011 Figure Skating

This course is an introduction to the sport of figure skating. Although some of the time will be spent in a classroom learning basic concepts, the focus of the course will be on developing skills used in figure skating through on-ice instruction and practice.
This course will be continued the following semester; students from previous semesters are welcome. Costs for skates per week will be $2 per student. Costs for ice time will vary based on class size. The course will require about 1 hour of work per week, outside of class.

98-012 Fun with Robots

This course students will be given a hands-on look at robotics and electronics in general. Students will receive a robot to program and explore throughout the course. Successfully passing the course will mean the robot is yours to keep.

98-013 MAC OS X Development with Cocoa

Cocoa makes it easy to create great applications for Mac OS X with a minimum of effort -- but only after you learn it. In this class, you'll learn the basics of building a Cocoa app and then some more advanced techniques to create rich and polished apps that people will enjoy using. Knowledge equivalent to having taken 15-111 will be assumed.

98-038 Introduction to Anime

This course is meant to introduce anime to two groups of people: (1) people who want to find out what anime is and why it is so popular and (2) people who know what anime is but are interested in finding more series to watch.
The class provides a brief overview of anime with topics such as trivia, stereotypes, history, culture, genres and lasting appeal of anime. Topics are introduced to the student by means of lectures, websites, handouts, discussions, sample anime episodes and self-exploration of new and old anime series.
Note: The course assumes that the students fit into the one of the two groups of people stated above. People who have seen many different types of anime series should email one of the instructors to determine if they should register for the class.

This class is designed for students with two years or less of dance experience. Basic terminology and technique in a variety of dance styles, including ballet and hip-hop, will be introduced.

98-086 Gadgetry 101

Section B: T 6:30PM - 7:50PM RM TBA Have you ever wanted to build a gadget but don't know how to get started? In this class we'll work hands on with common gadget components, putting you in control of diverse sensors and actuators to sense and manipulate your environment. Once you master the basics, we'll teach you how to design and create custom printed circuit boards. For a final project you'll take your own ideas and produce an original gadget by the end of the semester.

Explore traditional Chinese music through audio, video materials and live performances! Topics include Traditional Instrument, Chinese Orchestras, and Chinese Operas, it will be a new journey to the Chinese music.

98-089 Introduction to Professional Baking

Have you ever wanted to learn to make delicious French bread? Or perhaps a perfectly moist dark chocolate cake? This course will teach the baking fundamentals such as which flour to choose for any given baked product, or how to choose between butter and oil and the methods to create perfect products.
This is the course for somebody who has always wanted to learn the theories behind recipes, but doesn't have the time for cooking school. With recipes and techniques approved by Le Cordon Bleu, each week we will learn a new product ranging from bread to pastries, cookies to cakes, and of course, along dedication to the use of chocolate. Practice skills will be demonstrated and utilized in this class. This is not a lecture course, this is a multi-sensing experience!

98-092 DotA Skills Practicum

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is an extremely popular real-time strategy game, created as a mod to Warcraft III. We will cover the following topics: basics, lane control, hero combat, mathcraft, item builds, and advanced team strategies.

98-093 Photoshop

Adobe Photoshop, or simply Photoshop, is a graphics editor developed and published by Adobe Systems. Photoshop is the professional standard in digital imaging. It provides endless selection of drawing tools and color adjustment capabilities for manipulating items. To utilize the class environment, we will be learning other Adobe software that will incorporate Photoshop in InDesign and Illustrator.

98-095 Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike and Competitive Gaming

Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike is a popular fighting game and has been played competitively in tournaments around the world since 1998. In this course, we will cover basic, intermediate, and advanced techniques, match-ups, character-specific strategies, and the art of conditioning and manipulating the opponent. At the same time, we will also explore the universal application of Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike to other games to establish a general school of though on games.
Note: Owning a PlayStation 2 and a copy of "Street Fighter: Anniversary Edition" is not required but strongly recommended.

98-086 Creating Facebook Applications

Section B: T 6:30PM - 7:50PM RM TBA The goal of this course is to provide a results-oriented environment in which to create and launch a product. Focus will be primarily on the development of Facebook applications, with emphasis on the idea and implementation. The course will culminate in a product fair displaying the projects. Projects will be done in groups. Some programming experience is assumed.

98-097 3D Studio Max; Introduction to Character Animation

This course is designed to introduce students to the basics of character animation through Autodesk 3D Studio Max. The course will first teach basic modeling and texturing techniques, followed by basic character rigging and animation using the "Biped" plug-in.

98-098 The Basics of Badminton

A course that teaches the basics of badminton. Form, technique and basic footwork will also be taught. Acquire the skills to play a more enjoyable game. Single and doubles will also be taught.
Note: Courts are reserved from 8:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday nights.

98-099 How to Solve a Cube, and More!

This course is about solving various puzzles such as the 3x3x3 cube, 4x4x4 cube, 5x5x5 cube, 2x2x2, the Pyraminx, the Megaminx, and the Square-1. Prior knowledge is not necessary to take this course. The course will mostly focus on how to solve a 3x3x3 cube, and will gradually introduce faster methods, algorithms and tricks in order to improve speed. The course will then introduce and teach how to solve the other puzzles mentioned above.

98-100 Chung Do Kwan Tae Kwon Do

Tae Kwon Do is a traditional Korean martial art. It teaches basic self defense as well as discipline and self control. Students will learn kicking and punching techniques and how to apply them.

98-101 Self Defense for Beginners

This course is an introduction to various concepts and practices of martial arts. Time will be spent on exercise, self-defense maneuvers, grappling, and understanding the art itself. There will be no prominent style, but rather MMA (mixed martial arts) experience.

98-102 Sculptural Carving: History and Process

This course will introduce students to principles of sculpture through wood as a primary medium. There is a lot more to object making than form and this class will explore the ways in which forms make meaning. Emphasis will be placed on the history and narrative of materials as they are chosen by the students.

98-103 An Introduction to Cartooning and Comics Theory

This course will cover basic comics theory and history, giving students a mental toolkit with which to create their own comics! They will learn various methods with which to approach crafting their piece and will leave the class with a finished book.

98-104 Introduction to Zen Meditation
Led by: Westbrook, Cecilia A

This course is taught by a student who has practice Zen meditation for several years and is open to all students regardless of skill level or religious background. The instructor does not pretend to advance knowledge or wisdom. Rather, it is the instructor's belief that this practice can be useful in the life of all people, and she hopes to re-examine her-own practice in an open and supportive environment of discussion and direct experience.
The primary feature of the course will be 30 minutes of actual meditation each class period; the remainder of the period will encompass an open discussion of readings, experiences, observations and anything the students or instructor find relevant.
Short readings will be assigned each week to introduce topics surrounding the practice, such as the history, philosophy and psychology of Zen with the ultimate goal of elucidating ways in which the practice can fit into everyday life. Optional field trips to different Buddhist organizations around Pittsburgh will be arranged for interested students.

98-105 Introduction to Real Estate Investing

This course serves as an introduction to the basic concepts and strategies of real estate investing, with a strong focus in residential real estate. I hope to give students practical advice on how to screen deals, finance their properties, choose an investment strategy, and much more. Course material is focused on buying and selling real estate to create a stable passive income.

This course is an introduction to the game of soccer. The focus of this class is mostly on soccer theory. We will discuss the rules of the game, the rules of different tournaments, and analyze different game tactics. We will make sure that you will become an expert in this beautiful game that is so popular all over the world but unfortunately not in the United States.

98-107 BeanVolution: A Course on Coffee

BeanVolved is a hands-on course that provides a basic understanding of coffee. Through a combination of workshops and seminars the regional, roasting, and brewing methods will be covered, as well as the historical, artistic, and cultural aspects of coffee. The central theme of the class will be the discussion of how coffee emerged as a critical drink in modern life.

98-108 Introduction to Game Design in Java

This course is designed to be an application course where students apply their newly learned programming skills from 15-100 and 15-111 in programming games. Students will be exposed to different kinds of game genres and will be encouraged to form groups with which they can work throughout the semester.
The course flow will roughly follow the flow of commercial game development. Thus students will be required to document their progress and follow good programming practices. At the end of the semester, there will be class presentations where every group will get an opportunity to showcase their talents.
Note: Class meets at the Qatar campus.
