Remembering Lowell Steinbrenner

Statement from Neil Donahue, Director of the Steinbrenner Institute

"On Tuesday, September 12th we learned the sad news that Lowell Steinbrenner passed away the day before. The Steinbrenner Institute for Environmental Education and Research was founded when Lowell and Jan Steinbrenner gave a very generous gift to Carnegie Mellon University in response to the Dunlap report to the CMU Board of Trustees on environmental scholarship at CMU. Lowell was thoughtful, engaged and generous. He took the long view and yet was impatient in the best way, recognizing the gravity of the sustainability and societal issues that form the focus of the institute. He did not meddle but remained deeply engaged with our mission and direction. He was excited and again generous with his time and resources when we launched our undergraduate program in Environmental and Sustainability Studies, and we will miss his dedication and focus as we carry on in his memory."
