Relations and Grievance Advisory Committee
This committee is comprised of Carnegie Mellon staff that meet on a monthly basis. The committee provides information to staff members who think they may have a grievance or who are having workplace issues. We work to provide:
- Information about the grievance process
- Supportive listening
- Non-judgmental feedback
- Referral to University resources, such as:
“When a work-related issue cannot be resolved through discussions between the individuals concerned, the staff member can file a grievance. The grievance procedure deals with cases involving an individual staff member and applies to problems involving employment (e.g. hiring, salary, job classification, promotion, discipline, probation and termination); failure to apply university policy; or alleged discrimination in race, color, national origin, sex, handicap or disability, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, creed, marital status, veteran status, ancestry, belief, veteran status, or genetic information.” (See Staff Handbook & Statement of Assurance) Endorsing neither the grievant nor the University in grievance cases, this committee is concerned about the fair treatment of all people.
*Staff Council’s Relations and Grievance Advisory Committee respects the sensitivity of matters that are brought before it, and treats such matters as confidential to the extent permitted by law and University policy. There are, however, certain matters that if reported to a member of the Committee, would obligate that member to report the matter to a University official, including but not limited to sexual harassment or assault, weapons violations, physical threats, illegal drug activity or other criminal activity. All such matters will be reported directly to Human Resources or other appropriate University official.
