2013 Food Drive
This was Carnegie Mellon’s 20th Annual Food Drive, an event sponsored by Staff Council. Since it was our 20th anniversary, our goal was to make this year's drive the largest ever, in terms of both poundage and dollars. The Drive ran from Monday, November 4th – Monday, November 18th, 2013. An additional weekend and Monday were added this year.
All proceeds benefited the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. If you'd like to donate by check (at any time of year), please make it payable to Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank. (At this time, the Food Bank is unable to accept online donations.)
Volunteers are always welcome and the activities are often fun, requiring little time. If you'd like to volunteer for the 2014 Drive, email Carole Panno (email@example.com).
Please join the campus community in helping to fight hunger in Pittsburgh!
There were several on-campus events in November at which staff, faculty and students dropped off donations of food, other nonperishables, cash, and checks. To get ideas on what items are most in need, visit the Food Bank's website (URL above).
One Day, One Can
November 6th, 2013 – At the HR Benefits Fair in the University Center (At this event, staff were entered into a raffle if they made a donation)
Kids' Grab-and-Go Bag Packing Event
On November 11th, Staff Council representatives and fellow staff gathered to pack 'grab-and-go' bags -- portable snack bags which are then donated to the Food Bank for giving to local needy children. (PHOTOS, below)
Children's School Run for Hunger
On November 12th, kids enrolled in CMU's Children's School got some exercise while helping with the Food Drive at the same time. Each lap counted toward the number of items their team donated to compete in the Cans Across the Cut event the following week. For more coverage of the Run for Hunger, see the flyer.
Cans Across the Cut
Monday, November 18th – The goal of this event is to collect enough cans and non-perishables to extend in a line along sidewalks and across The Cut. This year, Carnegie Mellon's very own Scotty joined us and lent a pair of paws.
All Campus Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration
November18th: On the same day as Cans Across the Cut, we partnered with the All Campus Thanksgiving Dinner Celebration at the University Center, hosting students, faculty and staff. Donations to Cans Across the Cut were encouraged from all dinner participants.
Loading the Truck
The Food Bank's warehouse is located in Duquesne, PA. On November 18th after Cans Across the Cut, volunteers gathered at the University Center turnaround to load the truck with food and other items collected from donation barrels that had been located in many buildings across campus.
