| Title: | BeatBots: Social robot design for research and entertainment |
| Abstract: | The design of socially interactive robots lies at the intersection of computer science, mechanical and electrical engineering, psychology, and art. At BeatBots, we have been creating products that not only promote the mutual development of robotic engineering and psychological understanding (as applied to research on autism and developmental disorders), but also allow public enthusiasm for appealing characters to support the creation and distribution of tools used in the context of social work. This talk will provide an overview of academic as well as entertaining applications of BeatBots' work. |
| Speaker Bio: | Dr. Marek Michalowski co-founded BeatBots LLC in 2007 with Dr. Hideki Kozima, designer of the Keepon robot. Based in San Francisco, BeatBots produces the Keepon Pro autism research platform; designs custom hardware and software for interactive robotic installations; and licenses its characters for use in fields from toys to advertising. Michalowski holds a PhD in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University and previously studied Computer Science and Psychology at Yale University. |
