Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley Campus Hosts Pennsylvania Governor

Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley campus welcomed Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett to campus August 14-15, 2012 as part of his effort to promote Pennsylvania as a prime location for high tech businesses and investment. As part of his Silicon Valley visit, the Governor met with several startups and influential Valley companies to continue to build bridges between Silicon Valley and the state of Pennsylvania.

Governor Corbett held a press conference at the Silicon Valley campus, with business media reporters calling in from Pennsylvania. Participating along with the governor were CMU Provost and Executive Vice President Mark Kamlet; Audrey Russo, President and CEO of Pittsburgh Technology Council; Eric Silver, CMU alumnus and founder of WebKite; and Adam Lyons, founder of Insurance Zebra. The Governor especially thanked Dr. Kamlet for introducing him to several key companies in the Valley, including Google, Facebook, Electronic Arts, and influential venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.

CMUSV also hosted Pennsylvania Chief Information Officer George White and Secretary of Administration Kelly Logan. Secretary Logan gave a presentation on Pennsylvania’s IT strategic plan which includes initiatives to modernize their data centers, using emerging technologies to make the state more efficient, and developing and maintaining strategic partnerships. Several CMUSV faculty members participated in the Q&A session, offering insights on ways to increase public-private relationships. “Carnegie Mellon already has a strong relationship with the state of Pennsylvania, and of course, Pittsburgh. Here at the Silicon Valley campus, we were glad to host the governor and his team. Interestingly, their plans to expand IT infrastructure, especially in the area of mobility mirror our own. Mobility is a growing area of research, one that we are paying close attention to through the efforts of our CyLab Mobility Research Center,” said Dr. Martin Griss, director of the Silicon Valley campus.
