Electrical and Computer Engineering

Students may now earn a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) with a focus on mobility, security, wireless sensors and networking offered through the new CyLab Mobility Research Center and many other research programs, located at the Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley campus. These exciting programs explore the possibilities for the development and application of future mobile and communication technologies.

ECE Ph.D. research opportunities in Silicon Valley span a broad range, including topics such as mobile context-aware systems, software and network security, wireless sensors, mobile hardware optimization, machine translation of natural languages, machine learning and statistical methods. Many of our faculty members are currently seeking Ph.D. students, including Abe Ishihara, Collin Jackson, Jason Lohn, Ole Mengshoel, Ted Selker, Patrick Tague, Joy Zhang, and Pei Zhang. Through multi-disciplinary, theoretical and experimental work, combining research delving into the technical, behavioral, and social effects of new technology, the Ph.D. program prepares students to launch careers as leaders in the application-driven research and technology development in the rapidly expanding field of mobile computing and communication. Ph.D. students participating in the program can pursue an ECE Ph.D. while living primarily in Silicon Valley. They have the option of completing all their studies at the Silicon Valley location, or dividing their studies between Silicon Valley and the main Carnegie Mellon campus in Pittsburgh.

Applications for the Ph.D. in ECE are processed through the ECE website. All ECE Ph.D. Requirements apply with a few modifications, such as allowing time in Silicon Valley to count as residency. The supervisory committee for Silicon Valley Ph.D. programs will have at least one faculty member from both the Pittsburgh and the Silicon Valley campuses.
