Develop a Network of Professional Peers

"I developed an interest in wireless communication and networking while pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. When it came time to consider a graduate education, I knew that I wanted a program where I could continue exploring the field of mobility but also one that provided the same type of interdisciplinary study that I had come to value as an undergrad. I couldn’t have chosen a better program than the MS in Information Technology program at Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley. Offered through Carnegie Mellon’s Information Networking Institute, the program is inherently interdisciplinary and allows me to choose from a variety of courses in engineering, computer science, business management, and public policy. Also, I have ample opportunity to engage in research and further develop my interest in wireless communication through the CyLab Mobility Research Center, which is located on campus.

One of the most unique features of the program is its combination of traditional and non-traditional teaching methods. Being a bicoastal program, students divide their time between Carnegie Mellon’s main Pittsburgh campus and the Silicon Valley campus. Courses which lend themselves to a more lecture-based style of delivery are taught in Pittsburgh, while other, more hands-on courses are taught in Silicon Valley using a learn-by-doing teaching method. I feel that both teaching styles are equally important, and the MS in Information Technology offers a perfect blend of the two.

Overall, the program has benefitted me both professionally and personally. Projects and practicums for real-life clients have connected me to the industry and enabled me to begin developing a network of professional peers. At the same time, I find that I’m more confident, pragmatic, and prepared to tackle challenges that come my way. "
